Clinical Analysis of Cleft Lip in Korea

Abstract
During the past four hundred years an ever-increasing and ever-refined body of empiric and scientific knowlege has accumulated on the management of persons born with cleft lip. Surgical repair of cleft lip is one of the most challenging procedures forced by the plastic surgeons and there has even developed new methods. In 1952, Tennison Presented new method using a Z incision. Postoperative result of this method was so outstanding that the method had been modified by Marks (1953) and Randall (1959). Same kind of surgical repair has been populized in Korea since 1961 and several clinical analysis had reported. The authors analysed clinical results of surgical repair of cleft lip during 1974 to 1978 and obtained following results.

1. Incidence of cleft lip is 1/576 in brith.

2. Male was 47 cases and female was 13 cases (M:F=3.6:1).

3. Left side commonly involved (31 cases), right was 15 cases and bilateral was 14 cases.

4. Positive family history was 7 cases (11.6%)

5. Average of hospitalization is 6, 7 days.
